How the ID works
It isn’t a black box. Here is exactly what happens when you photograph a find.

You get a ranked match, not a verdict
BeachNut returns the most likely species first, then the next closest candidates, each with a confidence read so you can see how sure it is.

Every match links to the field guide
Tap the match to open its guide page and compare your find against the illustration, size range and habitat yourself. Markings and exact colorations vary between individuals.

Not sure? Retake it
Clear, close photos in good light ID best — shell mouth up, tooth on a plain background, no shadow across it. A better photo usually settles a low-confidence match.
Identifications are best-effort estimates from a photo, not expert authentication — the same way our beach scores are predictive estimates, not official forecasts.
